Premier League Roundup: Haaland Leads Manchester City to Victory, Chelsea Secures Late Draw

Erling Haaland’s performance helped Manchester City secure a 3-0 win over West Ham United, moving them to the top of the Premier League table. In another match, Chelsea came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United on Saturday.

Arsenal has an opportunity to reclaim the top position when they face Everton later. Manchester City applied pressure with their seventh consecutive victory across all competitions.

West Ham faced an early challenge when Haaland scored within the first five minutes. Goalkeeper Alphonse Areola initially saved Haaland’s effort, but the forward scored from the rebound.

Haaland also contributed an assist just before halftime, leading to Tijjani Reijnders scoring his first goal at the Etihad Stadium.

West Ham missed several opportunities to reduce the deficit in the second half and remain in the lower part of the league table.

Haaland demonstrated efficiency by scoring his 38th goal of the season for club and country in the 69th minute, solidifying City’s one-point lead over Arsenal.

Chelsea, currently in fourth place, staged a second-half comeback. Manager Enzo Maresca had recently commented on the team’s need for support during a challenging period.

Newcastle Aggrieved

Chelsea’s form has seen only one win in their last five league matches, affecting their position in the title race.

Newcastle took a 2-0 lead in the first half with a double from Nick Woltemade. Chelsea responded with a Reece James free-kick, followed by an equalizer from Joao Pedro after a defensive error.

Newcastle expressed frustration over late penalty appeals and a potential red card incident that were not awarded, leaving them in 11th place.

“My last week has not been complicated; it has been good. We beat Everton, we beat Cardiff (in the League Cup), and we drew with Newcastle away, so in terms of results, I’m happy,” stated Maresca. “Again, there are things that for sure we can do better, but I think we’re going in the right direction.”

Salah-Less Liverpool Go To Spurs

Liverpool aimed to continue their improved form without Mohamed Salah in a later match against Tottenham. The team is unbeaten in five games following a previous difficult run.

Salah has joined the Egypt national team for the Africa Cup of Nations, temporarily pausing discussions about his future. A win would move Liverpool into fifth place.

Tottenham, starting the match in 13th, sought a home victory under manager Thomas Frank.

In other results, Brentford defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 with Keane Lewis-Potter scoring both goals. Burnley ended a seven-game losing streak with a late equalizer from Armando Broja for a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth. Sunderland moved to fifth after a 0-0 draw with Brighton.
